GROUP SHOW

reviewed by Stephen Westfall

The announcement for this show reads “The Next Revolution,” which strikes me as being a bit hubristic (if only because the work is conventional enough), but the four young gallery artists are promising. Max Coyer’s paintings have hovered between schematic portraiture and abstraction. A flattened cone shape that might be a head stands on its point, expanding to fill the top of the canvas. Coyer has used this format for juxtapositions of textures and velocities and by now the paintings are all buy completely abstract. His work seen earlier this year was striking and the latest paintings have even greater fluidity and assurance.
